  42.     A <span class="guilabel">Quick Mask</span> is a <a href="ch04s03s04.html" title="3.4.┬áSelection masks">Selection Mask</a> intended to
  43.     be used temporarily to paint a selection.  Temporarily means that,
  44.     unlike a normal selection mask, it will not be saved in the list
  45.     after its transformation to selection.  The <a href="ch03s02.html" title="2.┬áSelection Tools">selection tools</a> sometimes
  46.     show their limits when they have to be used for doing complex drawing
  47.     selection, as progressive. In this case, using the QuickMask is a
  48.     good idea which can give very good results.

  91.       To initialize a <span class="guilabel">Quick Mask</span>, click the
  92.       bottom-left button in the image window. If a selection was active
  93.       in your image, then its content appears unchangedwhile the border
  94.       is covered by a tranlucent red color.  If no selection was active
  95.       then all the image is covered by a tranlucent red color. At every
  96.       moment you can hide the maskby clicking on the eye icon <span class="guiicon">
  97.         <span class="inlinemediaobject"><img src="../images/dialogs/dialogs-icon-eye.png" /></span>
  98.       </span> in front of the <span class="guilabel">QMask</span>.
  99.       From the channel dialog you can double click on the name or the
  100.       thumbnail to edit the <span class="guilabel">QMask</span> attributes. Then
  101.       you can changethe <span class="guilabel">Opacity</span> and its filling
  102.       color.  Once a quick mask is initialized click on it to be sure
  103.       it is selected and blue highlighted in the list, and start to
  104.       paint on it with any Gimp paint tool. The mask is coded in gray
  105.       tones, so you must use white or gray to decrease the area limited
  106.       by the mask and black to increase it.  The area painted in light
  107.       or dark gray will be transition areas for the selection like
  108.       feathering. When your mask is ready, click again on the
  109.       bottom-left button in the image window and the quick maskwill be
  110.       removed from the channel list and converted to aselection.  Quick
  111.       mask's purpose is to paint a selection and its transitions with
  112.       the paint tools without worrying about managing selection masks.
  113.       It's a good way to isolate asubject in a picture because once the
  114.       selection is made you only have to remove its content (or inverse
  115.       if the subject is in the selection).

  174.       After the QuickMask Button is pressed, the command generates a
  175.       temporary 8-bit (0-255) channel, on which the progressive
  176.       selection work is stored. If a selection is already present the
  177.       mask is initialized with the content of the selection.  Once
  178.       QuickMask has been activated, the image is covered by a red
  179.       semi-transparent veil. This one representes the non-selected
  180.       pixels.  Any <a href="ch03s03.html" title="3.┬áBrush Tools">paint tool</a>
  181.       can be used to create the selection on the QuickMask. They should
  182.       use only greyscale color, conforming the channel properties,
  183.       white enabling to define the future selected place.  The
  184.       selection will be displayed as soon as the QuickMask will be
  185.       toggled but its temporary channel will not be available anymore.
